A Day at the Zoo
It was a beautiful clear morning when we left Mudgee for the drive t
o Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo. The children were all very excited. This was the first time we have been to the zoo that Andrew was was old enough to be able to recognise all the animals and he was particularly keen to see the elephants, lions and giraffes.
Erin: The apes sang a wonderful song. They were very noisy. Andrew was a bit scared of all the noise. The apes were swinging through the ropes and doing a performance for the visitors. The baby one was trying to climb on the rope but it kept slipping off. When they had finished the little ape got onto the mummy's tummy.

The otters were amazing at swimming. They would win the swimming carnival. The keepers were there and were teaching them tricks. They had to do things and they would get a fish treat. There was a giant pot in the water that they liked to swim around.
Kathryn: The elephant. The keepers came to feed the elephant and one of the elephants went to the toilet. During the keeper talk, one of the elephants, Cherie, ran away and they had to run to catch her. Cherie ran faster and faster as the keeper gave chase and did a a whole lap of the enclosure. There were three girl elephants: Yum Yum, Cuddles and Cherie. They are African elephants.
The tiger was asleep near the trees. There was some water in front of him. The lion was sitting on a rock. Other people thought there was only two lionesses and thought the lion was asleep. But he sat up and looked at us. We also saw the cheetahs. There were three, a mummy with her two daughters. They can run very fast up to 116 km per hour. They have brown spots. A cheetah is smaller than a leopard and can run faster. The zebras were very close to us. One had lots of white on it and one had lots of black on it. The other one
was very small.
We didn't spend much time looking at the kangaroos as we see them all the time in Mudgee. We also saw giraffes (including a new baby giraffe), camels, barbary sheep, oryx, rhinocerous and hippopotamus.
Andrew loved seeing the animals that he had only ever seen on television or in books. His favourite was the elephant. We will be hearing about the zoo visit for a long time to come. Sophie enjoyed everything, little miss inquisitive didn't miss a thing. All four children slept very well on the way home in the car.
