Erin & Kathryn go Horse Riding

On Monday Erin and Kathryn spent the day riding at the Carousel Equestrian Centre just 8km out of Mudgee. There were 10 girls there for the a great day learning about grooming, saddling up, riding at a walk and trot, and playing games on their horses. They also had a barbecue lunch and got to paint a horse poster.

Erin was excited to have Monte again. She had ridden Monte before at her birthday party. Erin’s favourite part of the day was practicing her rising trot and making the horse poster. Erin and Monte also won egg and spoon race.

Kathryn rode Freckles (again the same horse she had at Erin’s birthday party). Freckles and Kathryn won the flag race being first over the line. Kathryn’s favourite things were flag racing, trotting and combing Freckles tail.

Kathryn loved learning all sorts of things about horse care. She told Daddy that she learned that you never stand behind your horse, but always to the side. She demonstrated to him how to hold the tail to the side while you comb it. She was also excited that one of the teachers told her how beautifully Freckles' tail shone after Kathryn’s combing. They then used Freckles to demonstrate plaiting on his mane and tail.

All in all the girls had a great time and can’t wait to go back again!

  • My girls loved horse riding, Elizabeth. Both Miriam and Christine at the ages of 12 (they're 7 months apart in age and step-sisters) started at the Dingley Horse Riding School and were hooked. Then we discovered a place not far from home where you could lease a horse for $50 a month and go down there as often as you wanted. We were a bit nervous about it at first but they were surrounded by older girls and boys who knew horses and one of the mothers there was also a trained nurse, so we felt safe in leaving them there each Saturday (and sometimes Sunday afternoons), plus school holidays to ride to their hearts' content. They learnt so much. As they got older we bought Christine a horse for her birthday and Mirri found a horse she could lease that was hers until it got old and died. But high school life got too busy for her so she stopped - Christine kept going. Both girls found out about Riding for the Disabled and assisted there for a couple of years - Christine went on to do formal studies and today she is at the Irish National Stud working towards her certificate there to work in the Thoroughbred Industry anywhere in the world! Some of her story can be seen at our family blog but also her own blog recently developed at www.darquette.blogspot.com - perhaps your girls might enjoy reading it!
